Plant Biodefenders Limited with Reg. No.138675904 is a private company registered in Tanzania since 2019. The company manufactures an innovative biopesticide, named VURUGA BIOCIDE that fights the highly destructive and invasive fall armyworm, a pest that threatens crop yields in Tanzania, impacting livelihoods and food security.
The bio pesticide is made by isolating the Aspergillus oryzae fungus and injecting it into fall armyworm larvae. Vuruga Biocide is a novel registered product with registration number BCA/IN.0005 under Plant Biodefenders for control of Spodoptera Frugiperda (fall armyworm) and Tuta absoluta in Tanzania.
The research that led to the development of Vuruga Biocide was led by Plant Biodenfenders founder Dr. Never Zekeya at the Nelson Mandela African Institute of Science and Technology. With the support of the United Nations‘ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Dr. Never was able to conduct several trials in different regions in Tanzania and to complete all regulatory processes to obtain the required certifications as a biological control product. According to trial-based data, Vuruga Biopesticide is highly effective, eliminating 80-100% of pests. It is patented nationally and on the African continent.
