From Local Innovation to Regional Markets

The engagement followed the PBL’s recent award recognition and focused on expanding its biological crop protection solutions across the East African Community and Southern African Development Community markets. With FAO support for the registration of Vuruga Biocide and NEMO Biocide, the partnership is helping to advance solutions to pesticide-residue challenges affecting access to European markets for Tanzanian avocados.
From innovation to jobs
For Dr Mwambela, however, the larger opportunity extends beyond products and production facilities. It is about demonstrating how a Tanzanian innovation-led enterprise can become a platform for employment, skills development, and economic participation. Plant Biodefenders currently employs about 20 youth on a permanent basis, while approximately 100 others benefit from temporary employment opportunities. The company says its ambition is considerably larger: To create opportunities for up to 10,000 youth by 2030 if it secures reliable and sufficiently large markets for its products.

Zanzibar: The next commercial frontier
Plant Biodefenders is now preparing for another important stage of growth, with the company in the final stages of extending its production and commercial operations to Zanzibar. The move comes in response to growing demand for biological agricultural products on the islands and creates an opportunity for connecting Plant Biodefenders’ technologies with Zanzibar’s expanding agricultural and tourism-driven food economy.
Linking Research to Entrepreneurship:
In pursuit of a solution, Dr. Never Zekeya, a PhD graduate in Life Sciences from the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology and a RUFORUM Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA) Programme beneficiary, decided to turn her scientific research on ‘Occurrence, seasonal variation, and management of Tuta absoluta on tomato in Tanzania’ into a practical solution
